Financial Misteries
Financial Misteries
Eight journalists of Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore reopen the Italian and international cases that have filled newspapers over the past decades in order to shed light on mysteries as yet unsolved. From the superbanker Edmond J. Safra, who died in suspicious circumstances in Montecarlo, to the publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell, who drowned in the Canary Islands; from the Sicilian financier Michele Sindona, who swung back and forth between the Mafia and P2, to the president of the Ambrosiano bank Roberto Calvi, who was found hanged in London. Finance is a fine stage for battle; finance can turn into a mystery – often without an end – with feverishly ambitious suspects spinning obscure plots. Stories that would make for perfect crimefiction novels – if only they weren’t for real. "After thirty years of investigations there is still no judiciary truth – just countless interpretations. Historians and journalists are not judges. But sometimes they are the only ones willing to work on the collective memory." – Ferruccio de Bortoli
