Under a Black Star
With an insert by Simone Veil, ex-president of the Europarliament and current president of the Foundation for the Memory of the ShoahSidonie, from Martinique, lives in France with a Jewish family. She leads a tranquil life that is enlivened by the birth of her lovely twins. Until, one icy morning in 1943, everything changes. The Nazis arrest the Dubreuils, and Sidonie, “guilty” of being black, is deported along with her five year old sons. This is the beginning of a tragic odyssey: a crescendo of horror that ends in the furnaces of Mauthausen. A story of desperation and suffering. But also the story of a woman who, in order to survive, entrusts herself to the memory of her ancestors, to the strength that in the past allowed them to free themselves of the chains of slavery. Memories of the Caribbean sea and sun, of the music and perfumes of the Tropics against the horror of the Nazi extermination. Winner of the International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism award.
